I Know a Song About Stippling….

Well, my love ~ my Master Stippler, my creative genius across the ocean ~ what a gift you are to my life.

You constantly inspire me. Your passion and drive, the way you throw yourself into something so completely, how you master it so beautifully.

You inspire me to reach within myself, to find my own creativity again, to uncover the old blockages and gently dismantle them.

So what’s the point of your art? For one, it’s helping me return home to myself. And for that, I’ll be forever grateful.

Love you, Stippler.

I think you are answering your own question! When you wrote: "Stippling is essentially a mindless activity" I would like to disagree, or offer an alternative thought - stippling is essentially a mindFUL actitivity. When you say: "I find it very peaceful. I love making these patterns. It’s such a fun and exciting process of unfolding." I think you knock the nail on the head.

Years ago when I lived in Eastbourne for some odd reason I wanted to have a go at stippling, although I had no idea it had a name. I called it dot pictures! I sat outside the Youth Hostel I ran with an artpad and dotted, stippled away a portrait of the building. I don't think I did an outline in pencil, I think I just went for it. It came out okay so I hung it up but I imagine it went up in flames with the rest of the building when it burned down. I need to try it again!

Art is, for me at least, a way to explore, or looking at art, to see the world in a different way. Even photography - you take a moment and capture it, highlight something, some colour or shade that others might not notice, or present it in a different way. It can make us feel uncomfortable, make us see something in a new way, in a new light, make us look within ourselves.

Thanks for sharing your work and thoughts. And for those of us who didn't know, thank you for enlightening us on the word stippling!

It’s a mindfulness activity! That’s a benefit in addition to beauty and enjoyment. I know a guy who’d love to have you show some in an exhibit. :)

Love love love your writing so beautifully ABOUT the purpose of art: to reveal something new you had no idea was there before and to see the world anew!!!!!! Bravo bravo bravo

I'm a very lazy shader -- I use one technique and it is the weakest link in my drawing. Stippling has to be worth it, b/c half measures such as mine leave a gnawing sense of incompletion. Doing a job right -- some kids learned that from Dad, from Mom. There's something -- much -- to it, I think. I'm glad you have a new hobby that's so enjoyable, and so darn cool.

I think the purpose of art is both/and: BOTHE the inherent satisfaction of the creative process AND creating something aesthetic and meaningful to share with others.

Wonderful. So much art is about having a dream and then using patience and time to bring it to life. Perhaps that is what it takes to bring all dreams to fruition.

This is very cool, Hal! I would like to see your work. I like the idea of a show, maybe at Standing Rock. What I like most is how jazzed you get over geometry. I remember liking that too. Creating and appreciating yantras is a spiritual practice for Buddhists too. Have you ever seen the Monks creating their sand art? It’s kind of like stippling in color - 1 grain of sand at a time. I hope they will come back to Yoga Central in Canton as I would like to experience. I’ll let you know if I hear they will be there. Enjoy the Islamic Art Festival!

Stippling is a meditation. Your artwork is beautiful. Stippling is also found in the Aboriginal dot paintings. Mandalas are powerful. I think it's a magical place to be Hal, and it's clearly calling you.

Thanks, Hal. I missed your thoughts. Now I know you found patience. That’s good. Enjoy the quietude of life with pencil points. Nice

Hi! I haven’t been writing for a while either and it’s nice to hear you again. I’ve never stippled before but I’ll look it up in a bit. I imagine people do it for the same reason I decide to wear make-up. Like art, which I hate doing because it’s time consuming, I get a sense of relaxation taking my time, having no interruptions and creating beauty. Keep up the podcasts!

Oh, I love this. And I signed up. In the program, we had an art teacher who taught stippling. Youth art inspiration exploded and we have a lot of wonderful art in that technique. I love an artist's journey. x

I love your stippling. Trust the process: that is the purpose of art💜
