My gran’ma was a history teacher and ended her career teaching seventh graders Ohio History. The students who took her class had to learn all 88 counties in alphabetical order for a test! They created little books of each county in alphabetical order with a drawing of the county and info. I helped grade them when I was in sixth grade and felt sorry for them. I did NOT learn the 88 counties in alphabetical order but remember a lot of them. When I was working for the government, I even learned some of the county numbers like I believe Portage is 67 and Summit 77.

Any time I have heard your song, I have thought fondly of Gran’ma. Your teaching of counties seems more fun though!

In the video, when you ask if it wasn’t about time we learn the 88 counties of Ohio, I immediately reacted with a resounding “No”. (I seriously was thinking that this must be dry Monty Pythonesque comedy.) I was much more intrigued by the word “banakulas” and first thought it was a phonetic spelling of binoculars. I can’t recall ever learning about banakulas. I then looked at some of your other videos and listened to you playing a khaen, which is another instrument that I can’t recall ever being taught and had to look up. Another interesting instrument I DO know about is the “fujara” from Eastern Europe. I’d love to read and hear a newsletter on any or all of these instruments. If there are any more that you know about I like to hear more about them too. Thanks.

Fantastic. My 8th grade Ohio History teacher, Mr. Maddox, would have loved this and loved you. I imagine his ghost with coke bottle bottom glasses and 3 piece brown suit dancing around his desk in complete joy.

Memories, great memories! I’ll be honest, I never quite got the hang of it but left it up to the kids to memorize. Having trouble falling asleep at night sometimes I’ll recite things I have memorized (states, presidents, Periodic Table) until I drift off. The 88 counties will be next on the list.

Congratulations to Hallie, again, great memories! We love you Mr. Hal Walker - you’re the best!!
